Volcker on the VAT – Review & Outlook, The Wall Street Journal
Trial balloons are being set aloft here. Paul Volcker is talking about raising taxes on the middle class using a value-added tax (VAT) and energy taxes. Volcker is currently an advisor to the White House, and his mention of higher taxes will likely be the tip of the iceberg. Look for the Obama/Reid/Pelosi triad to start ramping up the VAT rhetoric. – Dick Young
The Ongoing Melodrama of Victims and Oppressors – Victor Davis Hanson, National Review
Victor Davis Hanson points out that in President Obama’s view, there are simply two sets of people in America, victims and oppressors. The haves and have-nots. There are no shades of gray. Now that Americans will be forced to share the costs of health care through mandates and penalties, the healthy and fit will be asked to pay for those who abuse their bodies. Addicts, daredevils, and even the lazy will be subsidized by the dollars of healthy, young people who otherwise would not buy insurance for themselves. This is simply more income redistribution from the Radical Progressive Movement. – Dick Young
Bernanke Says U.S. Should Tackle Debt – Jon Hilsenrath, The Wall Street Journal
Welcome to the party, Ben. Mr. Bernanke has noticed that at some point the United States may actually have to deal with its debt issues. That’s a big revelation for the head of America’s central bank. The time will come when Bernanke and his colleagues at the Federal Reserve will need to raise rates, which will make it harder for the Washington crowd to borrow money. This is Ben’s way of letting them know that they need to be ready for the rate increases. – Timothy Jones
