Rather than turning into a nationalized wave election in favor of Democrats, last night’s election was a mixed bag, leaving Republicans somewhat relieved it wasn’t worse, and Democrats disappointed they didn’t win more seats.
Republicans gained multiple seats in the Senate, solidifying their control on the appointment process and over ratification of treaties. Those powers, now unthreatened by wishy-washy GOP senators from more liberal states, will give President Trump the latitude to continue his one-two punch of filling American court seats with constitution supporting judges, and renegotiating the failed trade treaties of the past. There’s a bright future ahead.
At Fox News, Liz Peek analyzed the night’s results and declared, “A ‘Blue Wave’ it wasn’t; a blue ripple, at most.” She continued:
Despite spending over one billion dollars, more money than ever before for a midterm election, and even though they were confident of crushing a historically unpopular president, Democrats appear to have mustered only a slim majority in the House, while not even coming close to taking over the Senate. Their win in the House seems at best to have been in line with historical averages; they had expected more.
Admittedly, Democrats had a tough map to defend, including 10 Senate seats in states won decisively by President Trump in 2016. Nonetheless, from Texas to Indiana to Florida to Missouri to Tennessee, they spent big in hopes the Resistance would blast through the Red Wall of the Senate, only to find that President Trump’s supporters stood by their man.
