My friend Tim Jones, a.k.a. the Stissing Mountain Man, who I profiled for you last month, has a unique take on school shootings. Tim asked on his Facebook feed, what has changed at schools? In the 70s when he attended, students would bring their guns to school and store them in their lockers until they went hunting after classes were over. There weren’t any school shootings then. Nowadays, things have changed. Here is what he wrote:
Ok, so I’m 60 years old. When I grew up there was a gun or more on a gun rack in most trucks in the high school parking lot.
Some kids dissembled them so they could put them in their lockers after they ran their trap lines in the morning, or so they could deer hunt right after school. A gun was a tool. Not a weapon. Never a school shooting.
I have been asking what has changed??? I have some thoughts. But none of us seems to know exactly, but something has definitely changed in our culture.
Students had it hard in those days too. Unfortunately, back then there was bullying and, and there were no “bullying awareness classes.” Girlfriends were stolen. Teachers were hard on some of the students, both physically and mentally.
The problem today is not the availability of guns. Every house out in the country has a .22 and a shotgun. And a shotgun with 00 Buckshot is far more devastating than so-called assault weapons.
So, I’m wondering; Is it the video games? Lack of parental guidance and morals?
Here lies the problem. And until we figure it out, we law abiding gun owners are unfortunately and unfairly going to get the blame.
Opinions welcome. Let’s start a constructive dialog. I’m not looking for people clicking “a like,” I am looking for a dialog that will lead to safer schools. Most of us have grandchildren. Let’s fix this.
What are your thoughts? What has changed in America, and what should be done to fix it? Let me know in the comments for this post on Facebook.
For self defense, it’s important to remember Tim’s point about shotguns with 00 buckshot. A 9mm for self defense is great, as a way to fight your way back to your shotgun.
