Christopher McFadden of Interesting Engineering tells his readers that Chinese researchers have developed a new signal intelligence device that could rival or exceed those of the US. The device is AI-enabled and is said to be a “game-changer,” leaving adversaries “nowhere to hide on the battlefield.” He writes:
Chinese scientists have allegedly developed a new “game-changing” military surveillance technology that now means enemy assets have “nowhere to hide,” reports the South China Morning Post (SCMP). The technology is claimed to achieve seamless, wide bandwidth, real-time monitoring, and analysis across the electromagnetic spectrum. It can also pick up ranges from amateur radio broadcasts to more sophisticated devices like Elon Musk’s Starlink satellites.
According to researchers, this technology could enable the Chinese military to detect and track enemy signals with unparalleled speed, instantly decipher the physical characteristics of these signals, and effectively suppress them. Moreover, this can be done without disrupting their communications, ensuring the smooth flow of their signals.
Similar efforts to enhance electronic warfare capabilities have been made in the US arsenal, specifically in the areas of signal intelligence (SIGINT), electronic support (ES), and electronic attack (EA). The US has invested in advanced technologies to improve its capability to monitor, analyze, and respond to electromagnetic signals. […]
If the allegations are true, the new device significantly improves Chinese electronic warfare capabilities, especially regarding real-time monitoring and analysis of the electromagnetic spectrum. This progress allows for seamless detection across a wide range of frequencies, which could significantly impact the effectiveness of military communications and operations for the Chinese military.
